He has the hip flexibility to reach blockers and then flip around them, the explosion forward to the second level as well as backward to pull around the edge and the lateral movement to mirror rushers trying to go around him. This should come as no surprise, as Wylie’s Pro Day was quite impressive and he is an offensive lineman playing for Andy Reid after all.ExplosionWylie starts off the snap here with a combo block to allow Mitchell Schwartz to get the defensive tackle and then immediately explodes up to the second level to get the linebacker coming into the A-gap. He ends up pushing the linebacker directly into the gap. Hunt runs into it, and it was more of a mistake by Hunt than Wylie doing anything incorrectly. The ability to quickly work a combo block, then get into second-level players is going to be paramount to the Chiefs’ rushing attack this year, especially if Eric Bieniemy is going to continue to sprinkle in a few more power running plays. Wylie’s athleticism doesn’t stop with the run game, either. Like some other guards on the Chiefs roster, he’s still a fluid mover going backward and laterally. Lateral movementYou want to see Wylie get a little more depth with his initial drive-catch phase here. He covers almost no ground, but part of that is his reliance on quick setting as well. After the initial step, Wylie takes a quick 45-degree angle set to get out wide in case the defensive end tries to split him and Schwartz. That kind of backward explosion is what should be happening on his first step as opposed to the second step so often, but that should also come with more experience. After he recognizes the defensive end is going into Schwartz’s gap, Wylie quickly works back across his gap to help with the nose tackle that got knocked his direction. He doesn’t have to actually do anything, but the quick recovery and flipping his hips to get back to the other side of his gap in two steps was impressive. The movement skills of Wylie are great but also nearly a given for any Reid offensive lineman. What makes Wylie intriguing is that he certainly plays with a little bit of a mean streak and has some good power throughout his entire body. PowerThis play starts with a quick set by Wylie and a solid two-hand punch that slows the defender’s momentum out of his stance. Unfortunately, Wylie’s outside hand landed a little high and the defender takes control/leverage on that outside shoulder and forces him into opening his outside hip while trying to maintain his balance. Rather than just trying to run the rusher up the arc to the outside Authentic Kareem Hunt Jersey , Wylie shows fantastic core strength and a great recovery to stonewall the defender right there. As he is being forced to open his hips, Wylie is able to take another step back with his outside foot while bending laterally at his hips to get his outside hand back underneath and on the outside rib cage of the defender. This inside, low punch reestablishes outside control, forcing the defender to work back through Wylie. It also gives Wylie the leverage, as the defender is now standing straight up, allowing Wylie to re-square his hips/butt to the quarterback for a cleaner pocket. The anti-rotational strength displayed despite losing outside leverage quickly but being able to recover is a very impressive ability in Wylie. These have all been relatively raw traits with some skilled nuances sprinkled in, but, for the most part, that is what Wylie is at this point in time.It’s showing that he’s still mastering the craft of being a complete lineman.BalanceThis is concern No. 1A (I’ll get back to this) for Wylie right now, and it’s simply his lack of a solid base and good foundation going into his engagements. Whether in space or shooting off the line of scrimmage, Wylie is often lunging into contact rather than rolling his hips underneath him. This can lead to plays like this, in which a defender simply slides laterally out of Wylie’s path. If Wylie can’t get his hands on them in the process, he stumbles forward or falls to the ground. There have been a few other plays where in which actually gets good hand placement and initial push with this same lunging technique, but what often happens there is a defender eventually anchors and spins/twists Wylie off of his body because he’s playing with his hips so far behind him. Wylie is a pretty decent athlete, so despite approaching his space blocks the same way, he often at least makes some form of contact. But with his hips out behind him, he tends to shove the defender rather than locking on and driving him. VersatilityIf the above was problem 1A for Wylie, this is problem 1B. He’s predictable in his pass sets.Nearly every single pass set he takes is a quick set with a two-hand punch if he has a rusher in his gap or the Chiefs are blocking with a man protection. He, but not on this snap, can move his feet backward and laterally to stay in position, but his initial set is almost always a quick set with little depth Authentic Mitch Morse Jersey , and he tries to get his hands on someone early. He needs to use some single-hand stabs, a little catch technique with his hands or just about anything else so he can mix up his sets and become less predictable. Should he start?At this point, everything we’ve seen from Wylie should at least give us the confidence that he wouldn’t be any worse than Witzmann, who started at left guard last year. Wylie is still an incredibly raw player, so there is also a higher ceiling to be had from what we saw last year. If we were looking at this position battle as of last year, Wylie should have been the easy choice to get starting reps along the offensive line. This year, however, Erving seems to have the trust of the coaching staff and appears to have a grip on the starting role. When comparing the players directly, they have a lot of similarities in that their raw traits are pretty good, but their skills are rather unrefined and can generate some bad losses far too often. Between the two of them, Wylie seems to have his bad losses come in one specific way and a little less frequently.This should be an open competition between the two going forward based on the caliber of play that we’ve seen thus far, but Erving likely holds the small edge simply because he has more tools to his tool belt. Wylie has shown a ton of promise, but he’s a little static in his approach in both the run and passing game right now. He’s not bad, and if he’s forced into starting reps, it wouldn’t be the end of the world, but right now, he’s a bit too one-dimensional in his approach to each snap to get the full endorsement over a veteran player. Looking forward to 2019, however, Wylie could very much be in play as a starting offensive lineman for the Kansas City Chiefs, bordering even on a favorite.

The Green Bay Packers’ preseason finale had a few exciting moments for the team in the first half Green Bay Packers T-Shirt , but after halftime it looked like the team was as disinterested in the game as the average football fan. Despite holding a 21-10 lead in the second quarter, the Packers let the Kansas City Chiefs whittle away at that advantage in the second and third quarters as Tim Boyle turned back into a pumpkin and threw a pair of interceptions.All told, the Packers failed to score after halftime, dropping a 33-21 decision and finishing 2-2 in the preseason. DeShone Kizer played two series, throwing one interception and one touchdown before giving way to Boyle. The undrafted rookie was impressive early, leading two straight touchdown drives, but struggled down the stretch and finished with 127 passing yards, one touchdown, and a pair of interceptions. Here’s a look at how it happened.First QuarterAaron Jones looked shifty and strong early, giving the Packers a solid running attack for the first time all preseason and contributing as a receiver, but the quarter was dominated by quarterback play. Deshone Kizer started off terribly, airmailing an interception to Armani Watts, putting the Chiefs in great field position. Kizer actually made the correct read on the play as Lance Kendricks was wide open, he just made an awful throw. Kansas City was able to cash in quickly as the enormous tight end and former UW-Milwaukee Panther basketball player Demetrius Harris was able to post up Packer safety Jermaine Whitehead for a short touchdown.Kizer would rally on the subsequent drive, dinking and dunking his way down the field and picking up a key first down on a 10-yard scramble. The drive temporarily stalled out at the Chiefs 31-yard line, but McCarthy opted to go for it on 4th and 1, and Kizer rewarded him with a beautiful touchdown pass to Geronimo Allison, tying the game. Kizer also had another receiver wide open at the top of the formation a play earlier that would have made for an even easier score, but the throw he made was one of his best of the preseason. The Chiefs would move the ball on their next drive, but before the quarter ended rookie corner Jaire Alexander made his presence felt by stoning DeAnthony Thomas for a three yard loss.Second QuarterThe Packers would open the quarter by holding the Chiefs to a Harrison Butker field goal and Kizer’s day would be done. Tim Boyle would get to work immediately, hitting Robert Tonyan and Marquez Valdes-Scandling for big gains. Boyle had a few issues as the team approached the goal line, and Equanimeous St. Brown broke up what could have been a devastating interception when Boyle should have just thrown it away. On 4th and 1, Boyle found Tonyan again for a touchdown, capping off an extremely impressive drive.The Packer defense would generate consistent pressure on the next drive, and a nice pass breakup by Greer Martini would force a punt. Trevor Davis would cough up the ball on the punt return, but the Packers would recover. Boyle would continue slinging it deep, nearly missing on a few bombs before St. Brown drew a huge pass interference penalty to get the Packers back into the end zone. Boyle‘s arm strength is not in doubt, and his ability to make good long throws and good decisions to this point was a pleasant surprise. Aaron Jones would take the ball to the one yard line and punch it in on the next play to give the Packers a 10-point lead. The Chiefs would take over with about three and a half minutes relating, and Matt McGloin would immediately answer, airing out a 62-yard bomb to Byron Pringle. Pringle beat Josh Hawkins on the play, and Hawkins never had a shot. Darrel Williams would beat Greer Martini for the 7-yard touchdown, drawing the Chiefs to within 4 and bringing the clock to the 2-minute warning. The rookie wideouts would struggle in the 2-minute drill as St. Brown would fail to keep his feet in on the sideline, and J’Mon Moore would suffer yet another terrible drop. Boyle forced the ball on 3rd down, and JK Scott was called on to punt, booming a 47-yarder and giving the Chiefs their own 2-minute drill practice.Fortunately Green Bay Packers Hats , Hawkins and Demetri Goodson played some tight coverage and Montravius Adams provided decent pressure, forcing a punt and giving Boyle the ball back with a minute to go. Unfortunately the Packers couldn’t do anything with it, and JK Scott would hit a high hanger, giving the Chiefs just 22 seconds from their own territory.The half would end on a Herb Waters interception of McGloin’s Hail Mary, and the Packers would take a 21-17 lead into the locker room.Third QuarterThe Chiefs opened with a short field goal drive highlighted mostly by the inaccuracy of new Kansas City quarterback Chase Litton. Butker would knock it through from 38 to bring the Chiefs within one.The Packers went three-and-out, and Byron Pringle struck again, catching yet another impressive bomb against the Packer secondary. That led to yet another Butker field goal, and the Chiefs would take the lead. Boyle would then make his worst throw of the night with four minutes left in the third quarter.On 2nd and 10 he attempted to air one out to tight end Emanuel Byrd, but he never set himself and didn’t step into the throw, floating it into coverage. Armani Watts made an easy pick, and the Chiefs would make the Packers pay as Litton hit Jordan Smallwood on a ridiculous lame duck that Donatello Brown was unable to get back to. Butker hit yet another field goal as the final quarter of preseason began. Fourth QuarterTwo minutes into the quarter, Boyle was picked again while targeting DeAngelo Yancey. To add insult to injury, former Packer Makinton Dorleant took this one back for a touchdown, and the Chiefs extended their lead to 33-21. Boyle was an erratic mess in the fourth quarter. His mechanics and pocket presence have been solid all preseason, and he started the game with the same courage in the face of the rush, but as the game went on he started bailing out on his throws. The fourth quarter was the culmination of the decline of his mechanics. He simply couldn’t deliver to his receivers and made several poor decisions. On the penultimate drive of the quarter, Boyle let his eyes fall almost immediately and ended up eaten alive by the pass rush. The Chiefs were content to kill clock for the majority of the finale, and it would end 33-21 after several boring runs by 5th string nobodies. The starters were generally fine, and preseason darlings Robert Tonyan and Marquez Valdes-Scantling stood out, but the other rookie wide receivers — J’Mon Moore in particular — disappointed. The depth in the secondary unsurprisingly remains questionable as well. In the last preseason game you look for the down-roster players to win jobs. Tonight, it’s likely that far more players lost jobs than won them.Packers’ defense is elite in total yards, but advanced stats paint a different picture The Green Bay Packers’ defense currently sits in fourth place overall in the NFL in total yards allowed. That sounds pretty darn good. The unit is also second in passing yards allowed — a far cry from last year’s 23rd-place finish — and it sits in the middle of the pack at 15th in rushing yards against, though rushing productivity generally has much less impact on overall performance than passing.Those are good numbers to have. Given the choice, fans should readily want to have the best rankings possible in those categories. However, the team’s improvement in those rankings this week came following a game in which they still allowed 31 points despite holding the Detroit Lions to just 264 yards of total offense and a 145-yard shutout against the atrocious Buffalo Bills’ offense. Therein lies the danger with trusting simple yardage statistics — they lie, or at the very least, they can be misleading. Let’s look at a few reasons why that is the case.Field Position in Week 6In Sunday’s game, the simple fact is that the Lions didn’t need to drive the ball very far to score, thanks to mistakes by the Packers’ offense (and one notable one by the referees on the game’s first punt). In fact, Detroit scored on five drives in the game but they averaged just 35 yards on those series — three scoring drives were shorter than 30 yards and two of them picked up just one yard each. Here’s a look at each of those series:1 play, 1 yard, touchdown4 pays, 69 yards, touchdown4 plays, 1 yard Green Bay Packers Hoodie , field goal4 plays, 29 yards, touchdown8 plays, 75 yards, touchdownUltimately, the Lions started three drives in Packers territory following fumbles and scored on all three. Furthermore, they never began a drive inside their own 25. By contrast, special teams penalties often backed up the Packers, who had just a single drive that started closer to the desired end zone than their own 25.Rate Stats & DVOAInstead of the total yardage numbers, we need to look at rate stats and other more advanced metrics to determine the effectiveness of Mike Pettine’s unit. The Packers are second in passing yards allowed, and they do have a solid third-place ranking in net yards per attempt (which divides yards by attempts and takes sacks into account). However, ANY/A (adjusted net yards per attempt), which factors in touchdowns allowed and interceptions as well as sacks, puts them at just 9th place, and they rank 17th in yards per completion with 11.5.Those metrics jibe better with the pass defense’s performance in Football Outsiders’ DVOA metrics, which put the team at 11th in pass defense, 27th against the run, and 17th overall. In fact, although the Packers’ total yardage ranking improved following the loss in Detroit, they dropped from 13th to 17th in DVOA.Another interesting nugget from DVOA is that the Packers rank 32nd in variance, a measure of a team’s week-to-week consistency. That indicates that Green Bay is the least consistent defense in the NFL, despite a schedule that currently ranks second-easiest in the NFL according to opposing teams’ DVOA measures.Situational defense is also likely a key to the Packers’ ranking as more of a middle-of-the-pack unit so far in 2018 rather than a top group. Green Bay is allowing third-down conversions at a 38.0% rate, good for 15th in the NFL, and their red zone touchdown percentage allowed is 62.5%, tied with Seattle in 20th place. Finally, they also rank 20th in turnover percentage at 10.2%.One area where the Packers continue to impress is in number of plays per drive and yardage allowed per drive, coming in 6th and 5th in those numbers. That illustrates the team’s ability to generate three-and-outs and avoid allowing sustained drives.All of these numbers combine to suggest that this Packers defense is a solid unit, but certainly one that belongs more in a top-half of the league ranking instead of being looked at as a top-ten or top-five type of unit. In order to get serious consideration as one of the league’s better groups, this team still needs to improve its ability to get off the field on third downs, stop teams in the red zone, and generate more turnovers — all areas where Dom Capers’ defenses were abysmal. As APC’s Peter Bukowski noted a week ago, the team has improved in those areas compared to years past, and being around the league average should be enough to keep this team in contention.Just don’t buy into Pettine’s unit being great until those numbers get into top-five territory along with total yardage against.

He says the contact was “not a foul,” using that phrase three times to describe the play, which occurred in the fourth quarter and should have resulted in an Andy Dalton to A.J. Green nine-yard touchdown.Riveron explains the play in question three minutes and 12 seconds into the video.Here’s what he says:Riveron could not have been more emphatic. His comments were consistent with the way fouls like this are usually called. Typically, calls like this are only made when a player’s head is pushed back. Thankfully, the Bengals won nonetheless and the bad call didn’t change the outcome. It's a conundrum for the Bengals , who have remained loyal to Burfict despite his history of misconduct and suspensions.His absence will be especially noteworthy this year as the Bengals adjust to a new defense under first-year coordinator Teryl Austin.When camp opens with the first practice on Thursday Youth Tyler Boyd Jersey , they'll be teaching him the system while also preparing everyone else to play without him for the first month."Unfortunately, we're probably too experienced at it," coach Marvin Lewis said.The results so far haven't been all that encouraging.Burfict was suspended for the first three games in 2016 because of his history of egregious hits during games, including his blow to Antonio Brown's head during the Steelers' first-round playoff victory the previous season.
