The expansion, slated to begin this month and be completed in the second quarter of 2021, will allow the automaker to attract more design talent and upgrade design capacity locally, GM’s China unit said this week.

The facility, known as the GM China Advanced Design Center, is close to the company’s China headquarters in Shanghai’s Pudong district. After the expansion, the center’s studio space will exceed 16,000 square feet. It will feature a new color and material studio, paint shop, virtual reality lab and second clay modeling studio.

GM said an existing virtual reality room, viewing patio and clay modeling studio will also be enhanced and upgraded.The design center opened in 2012. The average age of its team, ranging from creative designers and clay sculptors to digital sculptors and VR specialists, is under 32, according to GM China.
